If you are in S5 and aiming for university or college, this event is for you. Applying2012 is designed to help you take the first steps along the road towards college or university, offering information and advice that will enable you to make the right decisions about your future studies. Applying2012 is open to S5 students from LEAPS Group 1 schools as well as students from LEAPS Group 2 schools who match any of the LEAPS Eligibility Criteria. If you are unsure whether you are entitled to attend, please phone us on 0131 650 4676 or by e-mail leaps@ed.ac.uk.
Applying2012 falls at an important stage of the S5 calendar. We have scheduled the event so that you can make best use of the information that you collect. We appreciate however that we don't want you to miss school at this stage therefore we have selected two dates that coincide with the February break/In Service Days in different regions. We'll be staging Applying2012 twice, as follows:
- Friday 10 February between 13.30 and 16.00 for students from Scottish Borders (Berwickshire High School, Earlston High School, Eyemouth High School, Galashiels Academy, Hawick High School, Jedburgh Grammar School, Kelso High School, Peebles High School, Selkirk High School).
- Wednesday 15 February between 13.30 and 16.00 for students from all other LEAPS schools.
Applying2012 will be made up of a mixture of short presentations, workshops and the opportunity to collect information about colleges and universities.

You'll be welcomed to the event by members of our student team and will be provided with a delegate pack. Welcome and Setting the scene A short introduction to the event will explore why it's important to stand out in a competitive market and will cover some of the basics of applying to college and university. Strategies for selecting the right course and making an effective application In this workshop we'll encourage you to think about how to devise a strategy for choosing your ideal course and place of study. Alongside staff input, current undergraduate students will share how they made these important decisions. Higher Education Exhibition Having spent some time exploring how you might choose a future study path, you'll have the opportunity to put questions directly to expert representatives from a range of universities and colleges who will be happy to answer your questions and provide you with prospectuses and similar vital information. Refreshments will be provided and you'll also have the chance to speak informally with undergraduate students. Myths and realities of college and university Applying2012 will end with an interactive workshop using an electonic voting system to explore some of the myths associated with higher education and student life in general. This will be an upbeat and hopefully entertaining way of ending a positive and valuable event. |
